How is Pineapple Skin Made?

The pineapple wax production process starts with the harvesting of pineapple leaves, a by-product of normal pineapple cultivation. These leaves, which would otherwise be left to decompose in the field, are collected and their fibres extracted. The separated fibres are cleaned and dried, and then the dried leaves are transformed into a mass of unbound material. A bio-based polymer is added to this material to give it strength and flexibility. Finally, the material is subjected to a finishing process to give the pineapple skin a leather-like texture and appearance.

Summer is in full swing and the linen in your wardrobe is sure to get plenty of use. In order for linen clothes to last and be enjoyed for a long time, it is important to care for them properly. By caring for your clothes properly, you prolong their lifespan and protect the environment.

We’ve put together some tips on how we can help you to reduce the negative environmental impact of the maintenance process – by reducing wear and tear on garments, the use of chemicals and the amount of water and electricity used.

• Wash linen separately from other fabrics to avoid discolouration and damage.
• To reduce the wear and tear of washing your clothes, turn inside out.
• Wash at a maximum temperature of 30°C.
• Prefer the delicate mode in the washing machine. This prevents the fabric from shrinking and preserves the right colours.
• It is best to wash linen without a spin dryer, or at best with the lowest spin dryer.
• Use a light, gentle detergent that does not contain bleach. Strong chemical detergents can damage fabric fibres and are not environmentally friendly.
• Don’t use a dryer. A tumble dryer is not a good choice for linen fabrics as it can damage the fabric.
• After washing, we recommend hanging your linen clothes on a tree. This gives them a better shape and the clothes stretch better.
• Linen clothes can be steamed or ironed, but make sure you do it at a lower heat.
• It’s very good to air-dry linen in the shade during the summer. It is worth avoiding direct sunlight as this can bleach the fabric.

We strongly recommend you follow these instructions, so your clothes will last a long time.

Epp, how would you describe your personal style and what are your favourite outfits that best reflect that style?

I think my style is feminine and elegant, rather classic. From an early age, I had a respect for clothes, because clothes are more than just clothes. It’s a way of expressing your personality and your sense of self. I put a lot of thought into every outfit, believing that less is always more and that quality and detail are more important than quantity. Dresses, skirts, flowing bodices, fine details like lace and flounces are an integral part of my wardrobe. I appreciate anything that accentuates my feminine features and highlights the curves of my body. It’s important that clothing not only accentuates beauty, but also supports my sense of self and helps me feel comfortable and confident.

What do you think is the most important quality that helps women to be confident in their bodies and in their clothes?

Awareness and love for myself are the most important things for me. I am unique and special and I don’t compare myself to anyone else. Rather, I focus on how I feel about myself and my inner world. I enjoy my body and treat it as my best friend. Whether I’m wearing clothes or not, I always feel comfortable and confident, and the reflection always brings a smile to my face. Sport has been an integral part of my life and I firmly believe that feeling good in my body gives me the confidence I need to face life’s challenges with courage and confidence.

What role does eco-friendliness play for you in your choice of clothes and how does it influence your everyday style and shopping habits?

More and more, I have come to appreciate it, and that’s one of the reasons why I’m a big Haruu fan. My wardrobe is one thing and another, but the most skin-friendly is of course natural and naturally sourced fabrics.

How do you balance trendy clothes with timeless pieces in your wardrobe and what are your tips for versatile combinations?

I have a wonderful stylist friend Kristiine Lään-Vantsi, who is also one of the creators of Haruu. She’s helped me make great strides in making the style I wear today as authentic and personal as possible.

When it comes to natural materials that offer both comfort and durability, high-quality merino wool stands out. What is merino wool?

Merino wool is obtained from merino sheep from New Zealand. Merino sheep are specially bred to have a softer and thinner wool than normal sheep. The wool fibres of Merino sheep are very fine and elastic, which results in a fabric that is soft and comfortable against the skin.

How to Care for a Merino Wool Retouche and Bottle Blood?

Merino wool garments need gentle and delicate care to maintain their quality and softness for years to come. In fact, merino wool doesn’t need much washing at all. For example, a very good tip for care is to simply place merino wool products in the fresh air. Merino wool has dirt and dust repellent properties – the wool washes itself. Sometimes, all it takes to freshen up a garment is 1-2 hours of airing in fresh air.

Here are also some tips on how to care for merino wool garments:

Handwashing: always give preference to handwashing, using cold or lukewarm water and a mild detergent, preferably a special detergent for wool. Avoid rubbing or soaking. Use the best detergent for wool. Do not use soap or detergent, do not scrub or soak. When washing wool, do not use rinsing detergents, which will damage the wool fibres.

Avoid centrifuging: Do not spin dry merino wool items as this may damage the fibres. Rather, gently squeeze out excess water.

Drying on a flat surface: dry merino wool items on a flat surface, preferably on a towel, to preserve their shape. The merino wool stretches out when hanging and the product loses its shape. The merino wool should be stretched out so that it will stretch and lose its shape.

Keep out of direct sunlight: Avoid drying merino wool garments in direct sunlight to prevent damage to the fabric fibres.

Merino wool can become topical over time and this is not considered a defect in wool. Tops may occur when the wool is abraded and this is a normal behaviour of wool. For example, you can find a very good detangler at the department store to care for merino wool.

By caring for your merino wool clothes properly, you can be sure that these well-cared-for garments will provide you with years of softness and comfort.

How would you describe your style? To what extent do you follow trends and current fashion? Is there anything that particularly appeals to you lately?

Hmm. I don’t think about my own look and style for years now. It’s so settled and probably consists of the keywords: layers, natural, trendy-not-following-trendy and wear-what-you-want!

At the same time, I have a total phobia – I refuse to wear anything the stylists want me to wear! However, I’m happy to support small makers, buy vintage items and increasingly try not to support mass fashion with my purchases.

I don’t follow trends. Rather, I have somehow always been ahead of the times since I was a teenager, through the clothes I wear and the way I feel. It’s often the case that when I wear something, other people find it a bit weird, but 2-3 years later, the whole community is wearing things like that. I’ve moved on by then. Forever basic things don’t go away, of course.

What do you mainly look for when choosing clothes/accessories?

1. Material.
2. Is it a “minukas“.
3. Convenience.
4. I’m wondering if it will fit with my existingwardrobe (capsule wardrobe) and how long this new thing will stay in my wardrobe.

Who has inspired you the most in the fashion world?

I don’t consciously keep up with the fashion world for a long time now – there are much more exciting things that excite me and I give my time to. But, if I am somehow drawn to the fashion world, it is through stories and personalities – that’s how I sometimes find my way to their work. The person, the persona and the WHY of the fashion designer has to speak to me. Then there is a deep charm!

What are your TOP 3 items to create a festive mood in your outfit?

1. Large earrings.
2. High ceilings.ˇ

How did you find your way to Haroon? What do you appreciate most about the Haruu brand?

I like family doctors. Just knowing that love is behind the brand. The first thing that caught Haruu’s eye was that the collections were for kids and adults – both at the same time.

And on the other hand, quality material – for me it’s very important that the body can breathe and that you can wear layers.

Your 2 TOP favourites from Haruu’s work:

1. Merino’s “warm underwear”, which is in fact a set of dresses to be worn on the one hand, and even a bottom layer of dresses, kimonos on the other!
   
2. Silk party – pyjamas. I’d like to roll around in it all the time, both at home and at parties. It’s just vaguely melting against the skin.
   
   

How do you choose clothes for the little ones in the family? What have you noticed about their preferences?

When my child was younger and I could choose most of the clothes for him, I naturally preferred natural materials and weatherproof sets. Now it’s interesting to see how a wealthy teenager can be inspired to make more sustainable choices, while at the same time being fascinated by the fast-fashion world because she can buy fancy and cheap things with her pocket money.
I would say that if I buy clothes for my child, we decide together, but I let him make his own choices with his own pocket money, because we all have to go through different stages of development and I don’t believe too much in prohibition. Luckily he’s a huge fan of my style – so hopefully I’ll inspire!

Do you have any tips on how to easily style everyday clothes with festive items without having to change your entire wardrobe?

I myself absolutely love layers. Back in the day, when I taught more yoga classes, I would throw on a dress, tennis shoes and a tee after class, add some earmuffs and a hat, and I was ready for meetings in the city or whatever.

Speaking of festive, sometimes all you need is a red lipstick, bigger ears and a pair of sneakers for heels. Leave the blouse on but add a sparkly skirt underneath or add a jacket to the top. Matching and styling with a few items is a fun game!

What is the 1 piece of clothing that has reminded you of a particular memory throughout the ages? Do you have one? Share it with us!

Interestingly, this question reminded me of my grandfather’s fur coat, which had pockets for cash in the form of stacks. Sometimes I look at my own hats with that feeling too.

Your 3 recommendations for the winter season – how to stay stylish, happy and healthy?

I think the priority is not to stay stylish. The most important thing is to stay present as yourself – and indeed style can support that. But about the really important stuff: making sure your body gets enough exercise and keeping your vitamin levels in order. In terms of happiness – keep your loved ones and allow yourself to be kept.
And speaking of real style: wear what you want! What makes you happy, makes you more you. It doesn’t matter what’s fashionable or what others think. Do You!

Saara Pius – a woman who needs no further introduction, as her brilliance and presence is not unknown to almost any Estonian. An actress, a mother, a wife – all with playful ease and great joie de vivre.

Many of her values also coincide with those of the Haruu family, and that is why we are so happy that Saara has found her way to us today! We asked Saara what inspires her style, how to choose clothes with an eye for the average person and what is the basis for making fashion decisions for the little ones in the family? Read more.

Saara, you always look fabulous! How would you describe your style and how did you arrive at your fashion preferences? Is there anyone who has influenced and inspired you in the fashion world?

I’m not quite sure what my style is. It varies from day to day and from season to season.

In the summer, jackets, jeans and sweaters. In winter, boots, jeans and sweaters. Simple and understated! Skirts and heels for special occasions. I can be so elegant and feminine, but the next moment a street urchin in comfortable boots. Depends on the mood and the day!

I tend to pile a lot of different things together, but in the end I can’t combine them, so I just walk around with a few favourite items. Most of the time I wish I had a stylist every day to tell me what to wear and how to wear it.

From the ground up, I have naturally been influenced and inspired by my mother. She had a bunch of heels because they were fashionable at the time and you didn’t wear sneakers. I would secretly try them on and admire them. Her femininity and self-care, self-dressing, has definitely rubbed off on me. I need some time to get ready and get myself ready. Of course, with children, I’ve also had to learn to do everything in a hurry. More or less…

Since I went to primary school, where there was a school uniform, I guess there were some influences. There was always a theme of very low heeled shoes and of course skirts. Nowadays, fashion is more uniform. Women can find all the clothes they want in the men’s world. Everything is unisex .

But when it comes to the fashion world, I haven’t had any particular influences. I think I discovered fashion as such very, very late. Maybe it’s only in the last 7 years that I’ve been following what’s going on more closely. Since I’ve had two children during this time, there has been a lot of confusion and self-discovery in my wardrobe in relation to body changes. It’s only now that I’ve developed an understanding of what works for me and what doesn’t. I’m still inventing!

Going online, browsing magazines and scrolling through e-shops is so time-consuming that it’s a bit nerve-wracking. So I don’t really try to keep up with every new fashion trend. I dress as comfortable and as suits me. There’s no need to wear something that doesn’t suit your body type at all – even if it’s horribly fashionable at the time. Fashion comes and goes. Style is timeless and enduring, you just have to find it.

What have been your biggest fashion successes so far? Do you have any funny stories to share about it?

I can’t think of any. It’s like when I started my independent life, the whole time I was at university I was in one big fashion slump. But theatre school and hipster grunge style just seemed to fit. Coloured socks, weird dresses, heels and a red leather jacket. Uhh…

Sometimes I tend to overdress. I dress too festively for an event that isn’t so festive and vice versa. Once I went to a fashion house for a day event where they were showing a new collection. But I was dressed so normally that when I arrived and saw all the important people dressed up at 12 noon and looking mega cool, it was a bit strange. I don’t know if it’s a fad now, but it was weird!

How do you choose your clothes? Do you consciously make eco-friendly fashion choices?

I would certainly like to make more environmentally sustainable choices. Everyday clothes are already very much that. I always want more quality. Cashmere, silk, merino wool, high quality quilting and cotton – wonderful!

I also appreciate people who can keep a capsule wardrobe. I’m not that good at it, unfortunately. But as my wardrobe is also full of performance clothes, cashmere and merino wool are not my best on stage. In that case, I’ll have to look for things from the world of fast fashion in the meantime – sad as that is.

I mostly choose clothes by the fabric, if it’s a tangibly good and comfortable fabric, that’s good. As I’m petite and wear a small, many brands are often out of the question for me. I know that their size 34 is big for me. But that rarely happens. For example, Zara or Ivo Nikkolo trousers are often all long and a bit wide for me. What often happens is that I need to shorten or narrow down a lot of clothes at home.

But I do have some established brands where I know I can get my clothes. I’m obviously quite modest and don’t look for very extravagant things. That appetite is something I realise on stage. I don’t buy frightening things and I don’t chase expensive brands. Of course, I keep an eye on Estonian fashion. Sometimes I also go to flea markets, as I often look for things for my children there. Sometimes I get something for myself, but I have noticed that I rarely wear things from flea markets.

It’s getting colder – how to dress warmly and comfortably, yet stylishly, this winter? What are your tips?

As I’m a big cold thief, I tend to walk around like a Michelin when it’s cold. I’d rather go for warm than fashionable. Sometimes I look at some street fashion pictures and admire those who wear heels, a miniskirt and a beautiful coat with their fronts spread wide, but the reality in Estonia is that for 8 months of the year I mostly wear one and the same big, thick, half-length “sleeping bag” as I jokingly call these jackets.
Whether they are stylish or not, I have no idea and don’t really care. If there’s a car commute from one place to another, I can use a nicer coat or a more fashionable jacket for a bit.

Indeed, it is important to stay warm and healthy! Speaking of family and fashion, how do you choose clothes for the little ones in the family? What are the main things you look for when choosing clothes for them?

Whenever we have a shoot with the kids or a commercial/magazine shoot where the stylist dresses the kids, they are so cute and beautiful. My heart immediately goes, why don’t I bother to dress them in such a stylish way every day. But of course they are pretty and beautiful to me anyway, no matter what I wear!

I really don’t see any reason to buy them horrible new clothes all the time. After all, they’ll outgrow them in no time, and besides, most of the clothes we fortunately get here and there from people we know. I also spend a lot on recycling and marketplace. For some it’s commonplace, but when a blouse costs €100, I’m left speechless. For children, it’s important that the clothes are comfortable, and weatherproof. They probably wouldn’t be willing to put on any baggy jeans and coats that don’t keep water or warm.

We couldn’t agree with you more! But tell us – what are your 2 go-to outfits or accessories that you always have on hand and can easily style with other items?

Very well fitting and fitted jeans and a good quality sweater. These are my must haves!

What is the oldest item in your wardrobe? Why this one? Do you still wear it today?

The oldest is probably an evening gown from the 1940s that I wore to a presidential reception. I still sometimes admire that dress. The fabric is so special and also the knowledge that it is handmade. I’m sure it’s relatively unique.

But when you think about which piece of clothing has been in my closet the longest… to be honest, I can’t really say, I’m a pretty frequent shopper and I’ve sold a lot of my clothes at flea markets. I don’t have any sentimental things directly either – I don’t associate myself with things.

I’m currently wearing a merino chiffon hat and scarf everyday in the cold weather – I love it so much! Practical and warm. I always adore Haruu’s kimonos too. When people wear them, it’s instantly beautiful to look at.

A beautiful and outstanding person is one whose eyes sparkle. Someone who is very committed to doing things they love. Someone who, in addition to work, finds time for rest and for themselves.
